REGION: Chinchilla urges regional integration

This week, Costa Rica's president-elect Laura Chinchilla visited El Salvador and Guatemala as part of a regional tour aimed at boosting Central American integration. Her objectives were twofold: securing recognition of the Honduran government of President Porfirio Lobo, no doubt motivated in part by trade concerns such as the bloc-to-bloc Association Agreement with the European Union (EU); and reaching a consensus over combating drug-trafficking, prompted by domestic concerns over spiralling crime.
